The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of the critically-acclaimed, award-winning new film “Shoplifters” Jan. 18-23 at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre.
“Shoplifters” has been shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and has received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. The film has been a major critic and audience sensation at prestigious film festivals around the world and won the top honors at the Cannes Film Festival.
On the margins of Tokyo, a dysfunctional band of outsiders are united by fierce loyalty, a penchant for petty theft and playful grifting. When the young son is arrested, secrets are exposed that upend their tenuous, below-the-radar existence and test their quietly radical belief that it is love — not blood — that defines a family.
Acclaimed Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda casts a sympathetic eye on unorthodox, even criminal family arrangements in this extraordinary film.
Critics are raving about “Shoplifters”:

“A masterpiece!” — Joe Morgenstern, The Wall Street Journal
“Superb!” — Manohla Dargis, The New York Times
“Miraculous.” — David Ehrlich, IndieWire
